Potter Park Zoo

Potter Park Zoo, situated at the Potter’s Park in Lansing, Michigan, enveloping an area 102 acres of land is the oldest zoo of Michigan. Housing more than 160 species of animal, including birds, mammals, and reptiles, City of Lansing owns and cares the zoo, Ingham County operates the zoo.

Potter Park Zoo takes part in the conservation projects of endangered species with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, called the Species survival Plan. (more…)

Waterloo State Recreation Area, Michigan

Waterloo State Recreational Area or Park, enveloping a total area of 21,000 acres of land within its frontier, is the 3rd largest recreation park of Michigan. The park is in northeastern parts of Jackson County and part of it is in Washtenaw County as well. This park is the largest of its kind in Lower Peninsula. The recreation park has 11 lakes, 4 campgrounds, more than 50miles of multi-use trails and a discovery center.

The park has many private lands inside the campus. The recreation area has still have some bogs and swamps left in the area post the last ice-age. Waterloo Natural History Association funds many projects and serves to the state offered services. Waterloo Horsemen’s Association co-works with the state for the maintenance and promotion of the horse trails and horse camps in the park. (more…)

Grand Canyon Trip

May is the busiest month for backpacking into the canyon and this year is no exception. With fairly moderate temperatures and (usually) very little precipitation, plus the North Rim opening mid-May, people choose to visit the Inner Canyon during this month before the summer heat sets in. Beware though, the real heat is just around the corner and as temps reach into the nineties canyon explorers need to begin implementing proper “hiking-in-the-heat” strategies, such as being off the trail in the middle of the day when the heat is at its worst. So, please, stay out of the mid-day sun, rest often, drink plenty of electrolyte enhanced fluids, and eat salty foods while on the trail. Those are the things that save lives when the heat arrives (maybe we can make a safety jingle outta that little rhyming gem?!?). (more…)

Hiking Boots Are a Hiker’s Best Friend

If there is one piece of gear you should invest in before hiking, let that be your hiking boots.

Your shoes are where the “rubber hits the road,” and also what protects your body from the shocks of walking. They shield your feet from anything else Mother Nature will throw at them, too. Don’t make the mistake (as I did when I was a starving student) of buying cheap so-called hiking shoes, especially if you are a serious trekker. (more…)

Starting from its southern terminus in Gaylord, the trail ventures north through Vanderbilt, Wolverine, Indian River, Topinabee and Cheboygan It then heads west along the Lake Huron shoreline to Mackinaw City.
